Legislation about electrical work in your
home
From 1st January 2005, anyone carrying out
electrical work in any domestic properties and gardens in England
and Wales must follow the new rules in the Building Regulations
commonly known as Part “P”
This legislation has been introduced to reduce the
number of deaths, injuries and fires caused by faulty electrics and
to make it harder for ‘cowboy electricians’ leaving electrical installations in your home
unsafe and dangerous.
You do not need to tell your local authority’s
Building Control Department about :
Repairs, replacements and maintenance work, extra
power points or lighting points to existing circuits providing they
are not in a kitchen or bathroom, or outdoors
You need to tell them about other work especially
in a kitchen or bathroom, or outdoors as these are locations that
have an increased risk of electrical shock.
If you have any questions contact your local
authority’s Building Control Department or contact us on Freephone 0800 8 247 766 .
